Top trails in and around the Granite Belt by difficulty

Easy walks for a relaxed morning

Granite Arch Walk: Girraween National Park

A short, flat walk through open eucalypt woodland to a striking natural granite arch. This trail is accessible for most fitness levels and a great introduction to Girraween’s landscape. Ideal for families or anyone who wants a taste of the park without committing to a longer trail.

Bald Rock Creek Circuit: Girraween National Park

A relaxed loop that winds through grass trees and granite outcrops along the creek corridor. The scenery punches above its weight for the effort involved. A lovely option for an early morning walk before breakfast.

Sundown Road Walk: Sundown National Park

A quiet, less-visited trail through gorge country with good birdwatching opportunities. The terrain is mostly flat with some gentle undulation. Sundown sees far fewer visitors than Girraween, which makes it a great pick if you prefer the trails to yourself.

Medium hikes for a half-day outing

One of the region’s most iconic walks, leading to a series of massive granite domes with sweeping views across the park. There is some rock scrambling involved toward the top, which is part of the ‘fun’. Allow extra time to take it all in from the summit.

Underground Creek: Girraween National Park

This trail follows a creek that runs beneath the granite boulders. It’s a genuinely interesting walk with good tree cover and some boulder hopping along the way. Note that this trail may be affected by the dry conditions notice.

Eukey Road to Castle Rock: Girraween National Park

A quieter approach to Castle Rock that rewards walkers with excellent views and far less foot traffic than the main routes. A solid half-day outing for anyone with reasonable fitness.

Advanced trails for experienced hikers

Mount Norman: Girraween National Park

The big one!

Mount Norman is the highest point in the park and the climb will reward you with panoramic views stretching into New South Wales on a clear day. Making it to the top involves sustained climbing over rocky terrain and some exposed sections near the top. Start early, carry plenty of water and don’t underestimate it.

Bald Mountain

A less-known but worthwhile challenge with open ridgeline walking and excellent views across the Granite Belt. The trail is rugged underfoot and navigation requires some attention, so it suits walkers with experience and a decent level of fitness.
